tip

While Ted and I were finishing up our meals at a restaurant, we were discussing what to get his mom Colleen, for her birthday. We were shooting back and forth ideas, when our waitress brought us our bill. Ted immediately started figuring out how much to tip the waitress...

Of course, all of Ted's gift ideas were rather foolish, or insanely expensive...so during the short break in our conversation, I took it upon myself to use my awesome superpower of awesome gift giving skills. After a brief moment of contemplation, the perfect gift idea leapt into my brain. Without a moment to lose, I shot the gift idea out of my mouth faster than you can say "to-bogle-burble-bin"...

Me: "I know what we can give her! I will treat her to a pedicure!"

Ted: "Umm...Lauren, that's nice and all...but we better stick with the seven dollar tip, instead." *smirk*

Me: "..."

I won't sit idly by as you defame your husband. I think he was absolutely right, that tipping the waitress with a pedicure is not appropriate.

On a semi-related note, what do you call your mother in law? Do you call her Colleen? Mrs. B? Is it the same as what you called her before you and Ted got married?

Lauren said...

Omar - Actually I don't call her anything. I just talk to her. I call her Colleen to others...and "your mom" to Ted. haha! And...I seemed to forget an important part of the blog. I will add it in. Ted was actually teasing ME.

omar said...

Nuts, I was hoping for some insight. I've been married for 7 years, and I've avoided addressing my mother in-law the entire time.

Lauren said...

I would stick with calling her by the first name. You are both adults...it works. Unless you have never called her by the first name, then I have no way in helping you. Ted has called my mom Nancy since the beginning, so there wasn't a weird transition for him. Lucky.

Nancy Face said...

Ted won THAT one for sure!

I wonder how many of your readers know what the heck a "to-bogle-burble-bin" might be, tee hee! ;)

Nancy Face said...

Lauren: It's even more fun when Ted calls me Nancer or Donkey! ;)

Stacey said...

Wait..you mean when I gave that waiter a pedi,it wasn't appropriate? Nobody told me that...besides the waiter loved the french tips.

I call my mil by name when I am talking to others..except her kids, then I say "your mom"..or "joe mama".

Thorny Tree Lady said...

Obviously, Ted doesn't know what a woman really wants. I'm sure the waitress would have LOVED to have had a pedi instead of 7 bones. Where could you get a pedi for that little?????

Nancy Face said...

I forgot to say that a pedicure is a GREAT birthday gift idea! :)

If you do it yourself, it won't cost any money...just your time and talent, both of which are quite valuable!

I know that TED'S mother-in-law would love receiving that as a birthday present next month...especially if it comes with a foot rubby! ;)

Lauren said...

Mom...your birthday present is already pending among all of the face children.

Shelby Lou said...

bahahaha that waitress was getting the special treatment

Physcokity said...

Ted is soo right on the tipping. While I'm sure the waitress would still have greatly benefitted from a pedi, what with being on her feet throughout her shift, I think it would probably come off a little creepy ;) But I do think it is a great gift for your MIL. Good call :D

Yvonne said...

A pedicure sounds like a FANTASTIC birthday present--great idea.

I do want to know what "to-bogle-burble-bin" is????

I'm so glad you let us in on some of your fun conversations with ted ; )

Sunbum said...

Ha! If I were that waitress I think I would take the pedicure!!!

Haha Kudos to Ted for being so quick with that one! Loved it! lol Your hat is adorable, you and Ted get my vote for cutest and funniest couple! A pedi is a very thoughtful gift I am impressed with your gift giving skills, you could even make a cute little certificate and wrap it up extra cute like you do! :)

lar what does that "b" mean on the corner of your blog? does it stand for...bacon?

Camille said...

I can see how that might have been misunderstood.

The "B" is cute!

Lauren said...

Shawnie...that is why we are best friends.

Connie and Tony said...

A pedicure! What a fabulous gift idea!
You should come to my school and get one, you get a free bottle of OPI nail polish!
If not there is a fabulous nail place on brown and greenfield, next to mountainside fitness called OBI nails. They do a great job! A little pricey though

oh Ted... so witty...

Alexa Mae said...

oh, that is just to funny. quick thinking by tedward. that's hilarious. and you can never go wrong with a pedi for any girls bday!

p.s. love love your outfit in that pic!

Klin said...

Hubs favorites tip is to write a note telling the waiter/waitress "Don't date more than one girl/guy. It's complicated when you get caught."

Ted is funny.

Your MIL is lucky. I love to get a pedi;)

Mauri said...

haha I love your guy's convos. And if I were a waitress, please, give me a pedicure! jk if was one & a stranger wanted to give me one, that would quite possibly be weird. Hmm. Good idea for your mother in law though!

Ben and Alissa said...

Hey Lauren! My name is Alissa and I have been reading your blog since, oh, like last May! I'm am actually a little nervous to leave a comment since you've wanted all your readers to leave comments before and I never did! I'm just glad the ninjas never found me to steal all my chocolate. Oh wait, it's probably because we don't have much chocolate here.

I found your blog through Heather (4bsinapod Heather). We had been in the same ward and then it split so now we're not, sad! On a post of her's last year she listed your blog among a few others that she loved reading, so I started reading it. I started from the beginning and have loved reading it too! You crack me up and so my husband started reading too because I would tell him about stuff from your posts that were hilarious!

It was actually about the time that Ted was getting home from his mission and I was reading archived posts that were talking about Ted leaving on his mission, so whenever I would go to your blog I didn't want to see the current post because I wanted to catch up first before I found out what was going on with you two!

Alicia that comments on your blog is a friend of mine too (I can actually see her house from mine!) So anyhow, I have been stalking quite a few blogs and Alicia told me forever ago to comment on her blog and I never did, and then just last week I decided to and now I've decided to comment on pretty much all the blogs I read (I read Omar's too which I found because of his funny comments on your blog, do you think he'll let me comment on his? Or do you have to be in the "know"?)

Anyhow, so here I am, long-time lover of your blog. If you have read my comment that I left on Alicia's blog (about being up with my baby that would not sleep much during the night for like the first 3 months and so I would sit or stand at the computer while rocking a crying baby and read her blog) then you'll know that's what I did with your blog too! After I finished Alicia's I browsed around for a little while, found yours and that's what helped get me through the nights!

I love your sense of humor! Well, anyhow, that's it! I hope we can be bloggy buddies!

Ben and Alissa said...

I am so sorry my blog ate your first comment! I'll have words with it.

Jayci said...

a pedicure sounds like a medicinal miracle cure right now... i need one! i want one! I think I'll give myself one soon! As soon as I have the energy. :P

Hannahkin said...

i've always wondered what i could write to get you to reply to my comment with a comment, Lauren... it seems a privilege reserved for the special, such as Omar and Nancy Face. *sigh* too bad! :)

srsly, though, the waitress could've probably used a pedicure. it'd be a bit awkward in the restaurant though... so maybe Ted was right to stick with the $7 tip.

and where on earth did you get that gorgeous waistcoat thing? it's amazing!

and what on earth is to-bogle-burble-bin?

and are you feeling better?

Lauren said...

Hannah - What is a waistcoat? I am intrigued. Is a waistcoat the same thing as a vest?

Lippy said...

Good job Ted :)

Brian said...

I agree with Omar. Ted's right. Also a waistcoat is a vest.

Zach and Whitney said...

ha ha. Thats so funny. Ted is so witty. Loving the B,although when I googled the letter V, A really fat lady in underwear appeared on my computer. disgusting.

Lauren said...

Whitney...look up "letter V" on flickr.com. They have the cutest stuff. I never use google anymore.

Alicia said...

What a wit, that Tedward.

Hannahkin said...

waistcoats are the cooler cousins of vests :) j/k. it's another one of those British words that we use... like post!

Lauren said...

Hannah - Ah ha...while in that britishy case, I got my waistcoat from a beautiful store called "Forever 21". Since I am turning 21 in a couple weeks, I hope they will be able to preserve my youthful charm.

Heather said...

Hey, you should probably tip your waitress with a pedicure since she didn't eat of the next tables plates! ha ha

Erica said...

Hahahahahahahaha <- for serious, that's what I just did. Out loud.

Jami said...

you look so stylish! I think the pedicure idea is great!

Heather Perry said...

You can never go wrong with a pedicure. Who doesn't like to be pampered?

No Cool Story said...

I just wanted to say that you look ridiculously gorgeous.

No Cool Story said...

Ok, maybe one more thing: I call is mom "mom" (but I've been calling her that for 23 years) and he calls mine "mami"
;)

Amber said...

Oh my word that sounds like something my hubby would say. He finds himself so much more amusing than I do...actually, I find him pretty amusing, I just don't always let him in on that little secret. He has too much fun making me laugh when I'm trying to be mad.

I call my mil Mom when I talk to her, your mom with hubs and sibs and by her first name when I'm talking about her to anyone else. His calls my mom, mom, even to me, which always confuses me.

we went out for japanese last saturday and when i got the receipt it had the tip helper on the bottom of it. i think every single establishment in all of creation should have that. in my opinion. then i would tip accurately EVERY time.

aubrey said...

and i must say that i'll take a pedicure anyday..as a waitress or as a bday gift.

er, server. isn't that what they're called now these days?
