don't worry, i will be continuing my posts about my trip...
but i had to pause and review a couple of pieces of media, while they are still fresh.
while the tedward and i were on vacay, we saw the ever-popular "500 Days of Summer" in the beautiful city of Bellevue, Washington. {talk about a gorgeous theater!}
i had been dying to see this movie ever since i read a review of it in entertainment weekly...

...and hi. it has zooey deschanel in it. love her.

i don't know how to write a review about this without giving everything away, so i will tell you what i liked and didn't like...
1. i loved the outfits. if you love vintage, then these two dressed to kill. i told the tedward we had to make a run to a store immediately to buy him a vest. he agreed.
2. i loved how REAL this movie was. it was awkward in the most perfect way. i think that is the key to this movie. real life is awkward. relationships are awkward. you cringe at the things they say, and they cringe too. it was delightful.

3. i loved the way the film was set up. it jumps from different days in their relationship. one scene might be day 14 in their relationship, and then it will jump to day 324. at first you are a little unsure what is happening, but over time everything fits. amazing.
4. i loved that it made the tedward and i laugh out loud. even when some of the jokes were distasteful...ashamed that i laughed? sorta. haha.
5. i loved the beautiful cinematography. the scenes of LA were exquisite.

6. i love/hated that the movie made me cry.
7. i didn't like the few scenes of scandal...but at least the tedward and i are married now, as opposed to dating, when you have that really awkward aura vibe that happens during those scenes.
8. i didn't like that the movie ended so soon...

so, all in all...i loved this film.
i hope it wins awards.
i recommend it to adults..not to kids...just sayin'.
go see with your hubs! you will fall even more in love.
{and check out zooey's apartment in the movie...it's stellar!}
%20Days%20of%20Summer/1/500-days-summer2.jpg)
the tedward and i did like 2,500 miles of driving in 10 days...srsly.
are we crazy? duhspice.
while we were driving i had the following options:
1. eat my weight in sun-dried tomato and basil wheat thins.
{i may or may not have done that}
2. sleep
{i did do that}
3. listen to 13 audio tapes of Lord of the Rings.
{i did that against my will}
4. read "The Vampire Diaries"
{yes, please!}
Despite popular belief, "The Vampire Diaries" was written BEFORE Twilight, and L.J. Smith did NOT copy Stephenie Meyer. Just had to say that...

naturally i spent the first 100 pages rolling my eyes comparing the main character, Elena, to Bella. And I spent a lot of time comparing the main vampire, Stefan, to Edward. finally i decided to just let it go and enjoy the book.
hi. i am hooked. srsly.
the book is the typical, beautiful human girl meets mysterious beautiful vampire teen. their love is tested when a ton of mysterious crap happens...including stefan's hott vampire brother showing up who gets the hots for Elena. Good times.
the book ended with a cliff hanger...with me in tears.
unfortunately for me, we didn't have the next book in the car with us, so i was tortured. i am currently reading it and will let you all know how i like it.
please start this series and get into with me. you will love stefan.
but let's face it...edward can kick his trash.
want to know what i am excited about?
the fact that "The Vampire Diaries" will be a new TV on CW in Sept...

and hi...
Boone from LOST is in it.
Boone is MY kind of people...{HOLLA Lula!}

So, have any of you seen "500 Days of Summer"?
Have you read "The Vampire Diaries"?
Let's all discuss!

80 awesomespice comments:
Am I really the first? For real. Yeah Boone is HOTNESS, I was ticked he died before Shannon, she was a homewrecker.com.
Okay, I had no idea that "The Vampire Diaries" was a book. That makes me feel better. I totally thought that people from the CW were just going to jump on the Twilight cash-cow. :-) Oh, and if "Boone" is in it, I'm totally on board! (I HATE that they killed him off of LOST!)
Suzi...Amber...
You two are so my people. No one ever loves Boone with me! He was my favorite!
PS...I hear he will be back for the final season of LOST!
i have not see the movie, but I plan to this weekend. I really want to start that vampire series, because 5 of my friends had recommended it also.. so yes after I am finished I will most certainly get back with you
I'll read it if you share your books with me, since I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy them myself! ;)
Can I have your leftover Sun-dried Tomato and Basil Wheat Thins?
Hey Lauren, I gave you a little award on my blog....you should check it out.
I havent sen either of them, but i heard 500 days of summer was really good. Now, I've got a date with my husband!
seriously you liked the vampire diaries? i saw that at Barnes and Noble and was like.. stupid people writing vampire books to be all popular like twilight. Im glad they brought happiness to you, I don't think I'll ever read them.
Lauren...girl...you must give them a chance. I bet LJ Smith is PISSED that Stephenie came out with a series after hers. I feel for LJ. She is my home-girl.
I haven't seen or read either of them, but I want to see 500 Days of Summer because I heart Zooey Deschanel!!! But I'll probably wait until I can Netflix it. We don't make it to the theater very often anymore!
Oh, and I would totally be DVRing Vampire Diaries this fall, but my hubby says I have too many TV shows...personally, I don't know what he's talking about! I only have like 12 shows I watch religiously and about 10 more I would watch if I had time! =)
I just want to say I love your mom! Her comments make me laugh my pants off! P.S. I will totally read vampire diaries with you! I need to catch up with you though!P.S.S. My house is gutted and should be put back together soon...HOORAY!
I can not wait to see 500 Days of Summer. It's looks too cute.
I just started reading Vampire Diaries this week. I've bee struggling because of comparisons. I need to decide to just let it go too. I can't wait to get into it and I can't wait until the show starts on CW!
Glad you are back!
I so want to see 500 Days of Summer!!
Honestly, I read Vampire Diaries (and was obsessed with them) in jr high. And a bunch of other LJ Smith trilogies (The Secret Circle and Dark Visions are two of her other trilogies about supernatural stuff). And they are good, and were big in the 90s, and it wouldn't surprise me if Stephenie was inspired by THEM. Love them!
I love love LOVE 500 Days of Summer. In part because I want to be Zooey Deschanel when I grow up. And if I had the means I would wear vintage EVERY DAY. I love vintage so so much. And I loved it because while I cried, the movie was very true to itself. It starts with "this is not a love story", so no one has the right to complain when it ends the way it does. Very realistic.
Love.
Ok, I Will be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the movie as much as I thought I would be. Don't get me wrong, it was a great well written movie, but I was hoping they would pull a fast one and get them together in the end. Who know 3rd Rock from the Sun Boy would be so dreamy when he got older. Of course Zooey is just amazing and beautiful. I just didn't like the end how he is apparently ending up with Autumn, she isn't his type, therefore it didn't make it believable...Just Saying!!!
After seeing previews for The Vampire Diaries,I'm really excited to watch the show. I haven't read the books but I want to. Can I borrow yours when you are done? ;)
First off BOONE Holla!!Cant wait for the final season!
secondly im going to go see 500 days of summer in an hour cause i keep hearing how great it is so im going by myself.... yep
I'm so glad your back! I the trailors made 500 days of Summer look bad, but after your review I have to see it!
I am dying to see "500 days of summer" but my boyf is not so much dying to see it. Which sucks. I think I might have to force him against his will.
I was eh about The Vampire Diaries (felt like a wanna-be Twilight to me), but now that I know that it's good AND came before Twilight, I'm sorta kinda, interested. I might nick it off one of my students. ;)
Hope you and the Tedward had a fabulous trip! Welcome back. :)
I already told you this over twitter, but yeah, I wasn't feeling the VD -wait, that implies something else- excuse me, the Vampire Diaries books... I felt the plot was lacking and the writing didn't impress me. Not to say that SMeyer's writing impressed me either; her writing is, as you say, extremely lamespice. I'm looking forward to seeing how CW interprets the books, because as we all know, even though the network is geared toward teens, their shows will inevitably have major Unresolved Sexual Tension and sexytimes.
As for 500 days of Summer - I am in love Zooey Deschanel. I am ashamed that I haven't seen it yet. That is all.
hello miss lauren
long time lurker here *waves* i just wanted to say that i'm glad you are enjoying the vampire diaries, i read them forever ago
*15 years ago* in junior high and was in LOVE with them. they were my first experience with vampires. very excited about the show. but i so agree that "edward can kick his trash".
another series by lj smith is the secret circle, its witches and i much prefer it to the vampire diaries.
thanks for the movie recommendation. i will have to check it out.
I have heard of neither and now you have me wanting to run right down to the book store! I can only read the Twilight series so many times in a year so I started Harry Potter again. At last I am on book 7 and was wondering what to read next! Thanks! I'll give it a try.
The movie looks lovely! Maybe I can talk my sweetie into ti!
i loved 500 days of summer!
I especially love that they warn you in the beginning that it is not necessarily a "happy love story" kinda ending. I needed the warning.
Real life, real love, real relationships are awk (as you said) and this movie did a fantastic job. i <3 it.
you make me want to see that movie and read that book right now. right now.
I am reading the black dagger brotherhood series. I think you might like that too!
no but I want to do both now!! :) I'm glad you liked that movie. I have a friend on my blog-roll Lindsey Christensen who DID NOT... HATED, in fact, that movie. It made me sad, and then I didn't want to see it. NOW i want to see it again. :) I will indeedy!!
Annnnd... Boone..... hellooo booone!!!! I love that picture. AND i'm always up for new reads.
I'm reading Atonement right now (sometimes outloud to Mont - is that appropriate?! HAHAHA... prob. not). I skip the adult things.. but I'm not even that far. I read "cigarette" outloud to him and felt guilty. HAHA I'm such a BAD MOM to my cute little boy.
Anyway. thanks for the review Lovelyspice-Lauren!
Okay so seriously you were in Balboa? Me too!! It's the best place ever. I LOVED LOVED LOVED 500 Days of Summer. Can't wait to buy it. Thanks for the book suggestion. I am reading the HP series again (on #5) and can't wait to be finished with it so I can "sink" my teeth into another vampire/love thing. You're the best!! My girls and I are such stalkers of yours. haha
I have been wanting to try those books ~ it is good to hear they are well liked! I can't wait to see that movie 500 days of summer, hopefully soon. :)
I read the Vampire Diaries series this summer after the CW preview of the new show peeked my interest.
I loved the first two books, third was cool though a little frustrating at times. Fourth had the weirdest ending.
I too, naturally, did a lot of comparing at first, but these were written BEFORE twilight.
I am super excited to see how the TV show turns out, though I am kind of miffed that Elena looks so different than she is described in the book. Could the decision to go with a brunette instead of a blond have anything to do with the Twilight franchise?
PS I l-o-v-e Stefan, but yes Edward could def 'kick his trash'!
I just saw "500 Days of Summer" last night. I personally loved it. It was awkward and real and I even was okay with the bittersweet ending. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt rocks my socks off.
I haven't read the Vampire Diaries, but I'll add it to my lists :D
Haven't seen 500 Days of Summer, but I might have to check it out.
Ummm, I read the Vampire Diaries and I LOVED it!!! I read both books (well all 4) I feel like there might be one more to it. I have to run to B&N and check it out. It's such a great book. I did the same thing, by comparing it to Twilight in the beginning, but the camparisons stop pretty quickly. So glad you're reading it.
And Love Stefan, but agreed, Edward could kick his trash.
I've been dyyyingg to see 500 days of summmerrr! I want to see it. I have movie passes, too! Lol. Come see it again :]
PS I'm borrowing that vampy-book series. OKAY? kay.
I haven't seen 500 Days yet, but I have read the first two books in the VD series: Awakening and Struggle. LOVED them! And the infamous cliffhanger, ahhhhhhh! If I had money I'd buy Fury NOW! And I too can't wait to the premiere of the TV show!
Boone!!! LOVE him too! (who doesn't?)
" There is a Chinese family in our bathroom.." bahahahaha! I can't look at IKEA the same after seeing it!
Did I like it?? Heck yes! It's one of my favorite movies of the year.. I can't believe so many people havent seen it.. Although.. I didn't do a review because I would be ridiculed...
ps: I discovered that the VD had been published in the 90's when I was starting to read it, I saw the release date on the first page.
And I think I like Stefan better than Edward. Yeah, I just said that.
I have not seen/read either of these, but I am excited for both of them! I love Ten Things I Hate About You and therefore can't wait to see 500 days. Also Love Zooey.
WELCOME HOME....again!
I heart 10 Things I hate About You. And I love him in it..and he is a fox in 500 Days of Summer.
I've read Vampire Diaries, thought it was good, didn't enjoy it as much as Twilight though.
And Elena is blonde, why is the chic in the show brunette?? I don't mind some changes but come one they couldn't find a blonde to play her?
I saw 500 Days of Summer and loved it! I appreciate movies that make the story more real life and believable...even if it means I cry and feel awkward for parts of it. Zooey had one line in there [I won't say which one so as not to ruin for the non seers] that made me cringe and cry and want to hug the both of them.
In my movie it had a preview for the movie Adam with Hugh Dancy that looks like it is going to be really good as well and along the same lines...more real, awkward and loveable. There is a review of it in this past week's Entertainment Weekly [the one with Twilight on the cover...!]
I haven't read the vampire series and I'm not sure I will...there are a couple other books on my list [and my bookshelf] that I need to read before I buy more books!
great post!
x, ash
I want to see 500 days of summer so bad but the small town I go to school in doesn't have it playing *sigh*.
I read Vampire diaries on spring break and loved with it. part cus its awesome and part because I needed it to fill the twilight shaped whole in the heart when I realized I've read the saga way to many times to be healthy, "that's normal" right? I'm glad you noticed it was written before twilight too, I was getting srsly tired of trying to expplain that no L.J. is not jumping on the band waggon
p.s. Boone! *swoon* and seriously hes coming back for the finale did I read that right?
I want to pinch Gordon whatshisbucket Levitt's checks. I think he's adorable in a geeky kind of way. I want to see that movie but don't think it's playing in Utah. We always get skipped over in good movies.
I've been trying to go see 500 Days of Summer for 3 weeks now but I haven't got around to it. Movie times never work in my favor. I'm hoping to make Chase go with me this weekend-actually he agreed he'd see it with me (yes!) I wish I had time to read...if I did, I'd read these books. I will keep it on my list of books to read though!
That movie looked so good!! I totally wanted to watch it, but I didn't have enough time... poops. I love Zooey as well- have you listened to She & Him, her band, before? It's great. And her outfits? I'm speechless.
OK first.... welcome home!!!
And let me just tell you i HATED the vapire Diaries,( of coarse that didn't stop me from reading them ALL. I just thought they were really poorly written.
i haven't seen 500 days of summer but Zoey is my FAV... i must drag the hubby....
ok, and i am missing my So Cal right now... mostly the picture of Sprinkles is killing me...williams Sanoma has a "sprinkles" mix...that is just NOT the same...but it's a close second.
I had a Nick Lachey encounter on my trip to Africa... it was awesome!!!I love celebrity interactions...
Oh! I want to see that movie so bad. He's has that dorky cute quality that I love! It make me wanna watch 3rd Rock From the Sun!!
And holy moly that Boone guy is hott!! I may have to hook up the TV antena!
I'm glad you had a safe and fun trip! Can't wait to see more pictures!
500 days of summer was so amazing! I loved it! I might have to start reading that vampire series after I finish the gossip girl series. So did you and Ted drive up and down the california coast or what? Sounds so fun! Can't wait to read more about it! And yeah I was a little weirded out and flattered at the same time haha.
Is it just me or does Zoey look just like Katy Perry the singer??
They look like twins!!
I have never even heard of this movie or the books I'll have to check them!!
i loved 500 days of summer and loved her apt in the movie and her wardrobe and her hair and her purses and her smokey voice. such a great movie.
oh and LOVED that you saw it down the street from my old place.
{did not love not getting to see you, but totally understood.}
First off, um hello, 500 Days of Summer rocked my pants off. In a non dirty way. Saw it with my mom and sister and lalaloved it. And the soundtrack? To die for.
Secondly, I heard about The Vampire Diaries and was a little skeptical, but now that I have such a good review I'll have to check them out.
Thirdly, in response to your last post, I was just in Balboa Island last weekend!! Mi madre did a post about it and you commented, so we were quite pleased to hear you had gone. Have you ever been before this trip???
Glad you're back :)
I haven't read the Vampire Diaries, but I LOVED Secret Circle series in high school. A little secret: I had bought the re-releases a year ago to recapture the good ole days, and I forcibly also picked up Twilight under my sister's force... And well now; you know how that goes.....
I've been wanting to see that movie. Zooey is one of my favorite actresses, she is beautiful!
I'm about to start Vampire Diaries mainly because I want to see the TV show. My sister who never reads is almost done with the 4th book? (Second volume, but I believe it's two in one volume? I dunno.) It did get on my nerves the constant comparison that people said LJ copied Twilight - glad to see you posted how it came out way before. PLus yeah, hotness brothers always equals me running to the TV. Bonus: It's on the same night as Supernatural!
Amber
I Love, Love, love Zooey!
I am already in Love with
her wardrobe from the film. Cannot wait to see the movie!!!!!!!
LOVED 500 days of summer!!
very good.
havent read the vampire diaries...
sounds like you had a great vaca tho!!!
your review makes me even more excited to go see 500 days of summer..
I will have to see 500 Days of Summer--my kids say it was great.
I'm looking forward to seeing Vampire Diaries.
(I loved Boone ; )
I'd never heard of 500 Days of Summer until now, and I'm dying to see it! Thanks!
haven't seen the movie, but i'm dying to!
glad you're back.
loved reading about your trip. can't wait to read more. glad you had fun!
yes...in fact, i HAVE seen 500 days of summer and i LOVED it.
although my husband HATED it...
but i thought it was brilliant. it felt so real. i loved the jumping from beginning days to end days. i love zooey. she's amazing. i love the music in it. i love the artsy feel to it.
uh-maze-ing.
as for vampire diaries...have NOT read them...and have a long list of books right now to read. but i'll add them on to it.
:)
Oh Lauren, how I missed you.
everyone should cut their bangs like her. i have missed you too. still haven't seen her hair. i posted detox info on my blog for you. are you going to blog about your new diet? hope you are hanging in there! miss you!
We love that kind of wheat thins! The one downside is that they make your breath stink somethin' awful! But if both you and the hubs eat them then it is ok because you both have stink breath together. That is what true love is in my eyes -- sharing stink breath kisses. Anyway, you favorable review of 500 Days inspired me to ask my hubs to go with me for my birthday date. He consented so I am excited to see it. I liked Boone too. I was pissed when he was gone because I like to look at him. When he died I kinda developed a thing for Sayid...he's not bad looking either...and he can torture people which is always a handy skill. Glad you had fun on your vaca!
Okay, how have I never heard of this movie? It is the next one I will see, hands down. You did an awesome review, btw, and everything you said about it made me want to see it. (Except the time jumping around thing, I get so confused and frustrated when movies do that.)
I am sorry to say I will not be reading TVD's. I know I would compare it too much and hate it for being too close to Twilight but not. But I'm glad you enjoyed it.
When I was first reading Twilight, was telling my husband about it and he said it sounded almost exactly like these books he read in junior high. (Vampire diaries) He told me he'd read Twilight if I read Vampire diaries. I did the same thing in the beginning, comparing everything to Twilight and it took me a while to get into it. Its a bit darker than Twilight, but I loved all 4! And I was at Target one day and saw that there is a 5th book! I saw that they are making a CW series and will only watch it for Boone. The guy they picked for Stefan is butt ugly and I hate that they didnt stick with a blonde for Elena.
Anyways ...500 days of summer looked good to me when I saw the preview, then someone told me it was terrible. Thanks for the review, now I really wanna see it!
I'm planning on reading the Vampire Diaries. I'm excited that you love it. I saw the pilot episode at Comic Con...Loved it!
OK. I'm so happy that you liked Vampire Diaries. I read these when I was in middle school and fell in love. So much so that after several moves and many years the series is still sitting on my bookshelf. People laugh because they look so teenager-ish (and they are) but I don't care! I love them!
Boone. Is. Our. People.
Amen.
Dude, he's going to be an AMAZING Damon. (Stefan is lamespice. That is all.)
I still haven't seen 500 Days of Summer. 'Cause I chose to see G.I. Joe instead. Don't judge. I love Channing Tatum.
I haven't read Vampire Diaries but I am currently reading NightWorld by L.J Smith. It's also a GOODY!
Again, somethings run to similiar to Twilight, which makes me think that Stepehenie may have read these books before writing....
hummmm
Anywhooo you should read it after you finish the Vampire Diaries...
let's just say that tomato basil wheat thins RULE MY LIFE! so delish!
WOW! Ok. looking for the Vampire Diaries asap.
just wow.
i HAVE read the vampire diaries, and i DO agree that edward could kick stephan into next year (even though im on team jacob).
This is my first comment, and i got into laurens blogs through laurens bite, and i just wanted to say to you lauren, that im proud of you to give it up. i know you liked doing it, and i liked reading it, but i agree that ted is more important than i am.
and damon is way hotter than stephan. they misscasted stephan i think
I'm reading the Vampire Diaries right now. Just started actually so still on book one, can't wait to see the TV show.
and can't wait until Feb. 2010 when Lost is back.
I want to see 500 Days of Summer, I've heard alot of great reviews of it! :)
I love audiobooks! I just drove from Fairbanks to Valdez (that's about 6 hrs) and listened to Eclipse...again *sigh*. Don't know if LOTR would really "do" it for me, but let's remember that Tedward DID read the Twilight series for you so I consider this a mere sacrifice! :-)
Want to see 500 Days of Summer in a bad way but have a nursing baby who won't take bottles, hence, no movies for mama. I read The Vampire Diaries and was disappointed. Although I loved Stephan and felt kindrid to Elena because that's my name too, I felt kind of like the author was making vampire rules up as she went along. More towards the last 2 books than the first. I enjoyed the first. I am however looking forward to the tv series cause I too love me some Ian Somerhalder. Sweet sweet Ian. Yum.
E
I loved '500 Days' as well! I agree with all your fine points =]
Did you only read the first book with Vol1&2? Cause then yes, I agree-ish. It did end on a fun cliffhanger and I did enjoy the book but not enough to make me want to go buy the next installment. I think I am just going to let the CW take me through the rest of the story.
Lauren, I have not seen "500 days" I will though. I love Zooey Deschanel, her voice is so real and different. I want to read the Vampire Diaries and thought about it, I have read other vampire stuff such as Marked and Chosen which was way different then Twilight. Since you are married you can read them... they are not clean! Thanks!
500 days of summer was basically my favorite movie EVER! so cute and i totally agree with you about the whole awkwardness thing and that it was perfect. and my friend and i just adored Mark's clothes and we both wish that we could find a boy who dresses like him. (and Summer's clothes were way cute too love the style) and so jealous of how utterly in love he was with the Summer.
and the vampire diaries is on my list of books to read next. im glad to know you like it.
Ok... I'm making Tony see that movie with me tomorrow! And... Bellevue Washington?! I LOVE it there.. my uncle and family live in that town. Mostly because he's a doctor and they are rich. Talk about fan-cee!
Hi
Thanks to you I started to read "Vampire Diaries"
I am officially hooked.
Stefan is amazing, but Edward... he wins all around.
I am only in the 4th book, but I am super excited to keep reading.
So Lauren: It is official to say:
<3 You. No Joke
P.s. I still need to see 500 Days of summer. I hope it is as good as you say.
so weird you were at Lincoln Square in Bellevue. I live five minutes from there and work inside the nordstrom across the street. loved that movie it was amazing!
