fall fashion by the busy bee...

the weather has been changing, and i have pumpkins all around my home! everything is starting to feel festive, and i couldn't be happier. october has always been my favorite month :)

with the change in the weather, that means warmer clothes! i have been hitting up the thrift stores every saturday for the last few weeks in preparation for the colder months.

recently i made a pact with myself to only buy clothes from the thrift store, with a couple exceptions. those exceptions are what i like to call..."staples".

i have decided to show you a taste of my fall wardrobe courtesy of THE THRIFT STORE. no. i will not share with you which one i go to. yes. i am selfish. but anyway...i will share with you a few fashion tips....

my "go to" item { a black skirt }
Photobucket
turtle neck: thrifted, j-crew (tags still on it!)
skirt: thrifted, ralph lauren
scarf: thrifted, vintage
boots: thrifted (real leather!)

turtle necks are sorta hard to wear sometimes. i like to tie a scarf around the neck so it doesn't look too turtlenecky if you know what i'm sayin'. anyway, the black skirt i'm wearing is amazingspice. i can wear it with virtually everything. i can dress it up with a dressy blouse...or dress it down with a graphic tee. srsly...i wore it with a Beatles shirt yesterday and berry tights.

most important staple { good jeans }
Photobucket
leather jacket: thrifted, XOXO (real leather!)
scarf: thrifted, vintage
t-shirt: forever 21
statement necklace: forever 21
jeans: abercrombie and fitch "maggie" in dark stone

if you are going to spend a lot of money on an item, my advice is to spend it on a good pair of jeans. my favorite jeans are from abercrombie and fitch because they fit my hips and the length of my legs. since they are quite the investment i buy one new pair a year. they last forever! i have 4 pairs of the same style of jeans and they go with everything. make sure to try on lots of styles of jeans so that you find the one that looks best on you. don't buy because of a brand...buy because it makes you feel good. and don't feel bad about splurging on jeans.

anyway...i like to wear jeans for casual outfits, and for dressy dates out. in this particular outfit i mixed a bit of edge with the leather jacket, with a little glam by wearing the statement necklace. to keep from looking too edgy, i tied on a scarf to offset it with some softness. that's the key...mix aesthetics to create a great overall look.

my fav trend of the season { bright colored tights}
Photobucket
blouse: forever 21
scarf: thrifted, vintage (can you tell i collect them?)
skirt: thrifted, ralph lauren
tights: target
pumps: thrifted, vintage

ok, so i wore heels for the very first time today. it was awesome. and i didn't even care that i was a teensy bit taller than the tedward. good times. anyway...bright tights slay me. they are so unexpected and chic. if you were wondering if i got a lot of stink eyes for wearing them to church, i did. and i will say it again...good times. but seriously, if you are going to purchase something for this season, make it a pair of bright tights. if you are afraid of color, there are some great black or brown textured tights at target that are beautiful. get those!

Photobucket
did i mention how comfy the tights are? they are so cozy!

a must { the boyfriend jacket }
Photobucket
jacket: thrifted, vintage
tee: thrifted, gap
jeans: abercrombie and fitch
boots: thrifted

i have been on the hunt for the perfect boyfriend jacket and this weekend i found it! i literally exclaimed "PRAISE BE!" when i found it in the little boy's section. and the rejoicing continued when i found that it fit perfect. yeeeees.

the key to wearing a boyfriend jacket is making sure to roll up the sleeves to the 3/4 length. the other step is the pair it with a basic tee OR to mix it with a romantic look. either wear a ruffled skirt and a plain tee with the jacket, or something with a girly touch. the romantic/rocker combination is incredibly chic...it's my favorite look ever.

Photobucket
i love the military button details on the jacket.
if you find a plain jacket, you can always embellish it with homemade rosettes or different buttons!

another mandatory staple { slouchy cardigans }
Photobucket
cardigan: target (on clearance!)
jeans: abercrombie and fitch
camisole: nordstrom's
boots: thrifted

i am in love with cardigans. they look great over anything...tucked in, buttoned, unbuttoned or belted. cardigans are truly the best thing in the world. i like to buy my cardigans new because they are pretty delicate and it's sometimes hard to find a nice cardi in good condition at a thrift store. i like to buy my cardis in a neutral shade as well so that they will go with everything! cardigans are perfect for arizona weather since it is so unpredictable :)

HAPPY FALL FASHION!

question: which of these outfits should i wear for our anniversary pics?

Haha. This post is AMAZING. I really like your style, and the fact that you can get all these cute stuff from thrift stores, too. I LOVE thrifting! :D

I seriously take a hit each time I see your pictures, you're that stunning! :D

Karina said...

You are amazing Lauren! Seriously one of my style icons. :) And you can pull of SO MUCH! I wish I could too. :)

And kudos to The Tedward! :)

Allison said...

And i say tee, boyfriend blazer, jeans, and boots for anniversary pictures! :D

Jessica said...

Oh Lauren I love your style. It's classy, cute, chic, and just a smidge sexy. Perfection!

Marissa said...

What great photos! Hope you are framing these for your house!! How is the vegetarian thing going??

Miss Marie said...

Adorable! I love the boyfriend jacket, and the scarf... I wear my boyfriend jacket pretty much everyday, I like to wear it with a baggy tee shirt and kinda play up the scrounge/rocker cute chick look!! Love it!! I love goodwills but can NEVER find one cheap and good haha

Katie said...

Love love love! I have the same Cardigan from Target but in a different pattern. I may go back and buy the houndstooth too if it's still available. (I have a minor cardigan obsession problem)

The thing I'm looking for this Fall is a leather jacket. I really want one!

Also, can you please come here and teach me how to thrift? Seriously, whenever I try I come home empty handed. I don't have a good shopping eye.

Beautiful pictures, Ms. BBL. Once I feel like splurging (oh hai bee-tee-dubs I'm a bit cheap) I want to buy some berry tights from Target.

Jaydey17 said...

What can I say; you're super-cute, your outfits are super-cute!!
I cannot wear jeans though. They emphasise my fatty legs.
So I stick to skirts and dresses with leggings!
And I really really want a boyfriend jacket!! Très cute!

xox

Emily said...

I agree. I lovity-love-love thrifting. I like the comfort in knowing that I can wear something super cute and not have someone wearing the same thing. That is one of my pet peeves. Ooh. Dang.
I also LOOOVE slouchy cardigans. I think they are my favorite clothing item.
And I agree with you on the crazy Arizona weather thing. I'm hearing it's going back up to the nineties next week. NOOOOO!!!! :P

Nancy Face said...

Gosh, you make my yard look good! :)

Sasha Liz said...

Hooray, Allision! FIRST!!! haha

Okay. Whoa. Let me say. I love your boyfriend jacket or whatever. Omg, I have a jacket that is so super duper cute like that. Little boys section? Are you kidding? It looks like it was made for you.

Let's address the grass pictures. You look stunning. And I saw someone make a facebook comment about wearing a scarf bc you were vampire bitten. Love it. haha. Sookie Stackhouse style.

That forever 21 statement necklace looks really good. Almost like part of the shirt. I'm statement necklace impaired. And by impaired, I mean I've never tried it. Maybe I should.

Good jeans are a must! I hear you!

I have some high-heel black boots, but I really want the ones you have here.

Maybe the tights in the grass look for the anniversary pictures! Or the boyfriend Jacket.

Um, AMAZING! I am entirely too jealous!

Lauren, all these photos are BEAUTIFUL!! My favorite outfit is the second picture with the leather jacket...sooooo freakin' cute and edgy! I love your style and love these posts!

Kathleen said...

Such pretty outfits! I envy your style a lot, Lauren, you have nooo idea!

My favourite outfit is the first one. I'd say go for that!

Melissa said...

I love stripes alot. And that boyfriend jacket. In love. So I would pick either outfit number one or the one with the boyfriend jacket. Its amazing.

Valencia Lia said...

Ohhhh I really love love the boyfriend jacket and slouchy cardigan !!

But I'll pick the slouchy cardigan look <3

Marci Darling said...

These are some seriously amazing pictures! I love your thrift store finds, they inspire me! I totally agree with buying cardigans new...finding them at the thrift store is tough. For the anniversary picture, I like the black skirt with the white blouse and the scarf. Its still extremely chic but without a ton of effort, will photograph well, you will look amazing and years from now it will still look classic! Great pics, I bow down to the Busy Bee yet again!

{megs in wonderland} said...

giiiirl you know you gotta wear dem tights for the pics- FO SHO.

kelly anne said...

can i vote for the flippy skirt with the leather jacket? i like both of them lots. :)

Megan said...

Love the cardi!
I'm slowly growing my collection of them.

Full House said...

Ahh thrifting. That was funny that you weren't going to give of the goods on all your secret thrift store that you score your treasures at.

Jen said...

Lauren, you look gorgeous and your taste is impeccable...but why won't you share? I am in desperate need of new clothes and have a tight budget. We're not the same size so you wouldn't have to worry about me taking any clothes you might like. Can't you help a girl out?
Okay, enough begging.
Those are some seriously great pictures.

Loys said...

Lauren, you are gorgeous!!

I bought some colored tights a few weeks ago. I LOVE them!

Natalie said...

Stink eye at church for bright tights?

Here's how I see it: The Lord blessed you with a keen sense of fashion. Omitting bright tights from an outfit that is screaming for them insults the gift that the Good Lord crafted for you. Thus, it would be wrong to NOT wear them to church.

Love this post!

Maddi ♥ said...

gosh darn you are you pretty! You can pull off great outfits! I love the second outfit...or the last one with the cardi....gotta love em! xx

Cammie said...

The last one! You are absolute amazing... You got such good taste, I LOVED the cardigan in the last two pics! :D Cardigans are so sweet.

I own like 6 diffrent cardigans, even tho I only can wear them in the summer or at birthdays and stuff, since I live in Norway (that's why the spelling is so awful, sorry), were it's already snow!

Just last week I bought two pairs of colored tights, one wine-red and one purple-ish red :) They are soo cute!

Just wanted to tell you seem like an amazing person and I always laugh at your posts. They are so hilarious. Especially the lauren diaries. My sister thinks I'm gone mental since I laugh so loud :p

I have the flu, so I gotta go now. But don't think I won't come back. So keep the funny coming :D ...Wow, this comment got a little long (that's what she said?) :)

i love love love colored tights but sometimes forget that i am like in my 30s. um, 32. can i wear them? i wore red on friday with my black and red dress. yum!

Ashley said...

Love the post! I love fashion and your tips are right on with what the master "Tim Gunn" says. Staples are important but everything else can be bought cheaper.

For your aniversary pics I loved the cardigan look or the blazer I think those work best. Or you could rock the blazer with a frilly dress for a less casual picture.

P.S. Embrace Heels theya are amazing

lilnelablack said...

This post is awesome!!
And I think I like the tights outfit the best : )

lynninlove said...

So cute, Lauren! There is nothing more stylish then being stylish economically. I think you should go with the first outfit for your anniversary pics and then change to the yellow tights!

Meghan O said...

Awesome advice!! I'm definitely trying to get into fall fashion time and this will all be very useful. I really want to find a couple cute cardigans. I have a couple dresses I was able to find at American Eagle on sale for $10 (which is a really good deal) and it's too cold in New England right now to be wearing them with no sleeves.

Meghan O said...

P.S The pics are SUPER adorable!!!

I vote boyfriend jacket, gap shirt, jeans, and boots outfit for the anniversary photo!

Lula! said...

You are way chic! I loved this post!

Friday night was date night...and I should've taken a picture, because I'm rarely cute...but I was on Friday. Boyfriend jeans (soooooooo on trend right now!), with mustard yellow flats. An electric blue tank top, covered with a boyfriend cardigan...grey with mustard yellow stripes. (Because I'm not ghetto--and it's cold. No bare tank tops, EVER!) And my electric blue patent purse. Dude..I ruled.

Bwahahahaha!

Mary Beth said...

our thrift stores here, in SC, are disgusting!
Maybe you should do a post about you traveling to SC to come help me find some fab deals in a thrift store. It could be "no matter where you are there are ALWAYS good finds in a thrift store". SUCH a good idea!!!
I always love your outfits but I swear there's nothing like those clothes here.

Shannon said...

LOVE your fashion posts! You are so cute and trendy--LOVE IT!

Oh, and I would wear the outfit with the yellow tights for your anniversary pics. That pic of you lying in the grass is Per.Fec.Tion.

I say the boyfriend jacket look for sure! It is totes adorable! As are ALL of your fall outfits!

Marianne said...

You look fabulous! Congrats for Thrifting...another reason for Tedward to love you!

The skirt is my favorite!

Nick & Kristin said...

I love your style! Thanks for giving me such great tips. Now I gotta hit up the thrift stores! I say go with outfit #1 for your anniversary pics. The whole outfit is so chic. I LOVE that skirt!

Amber W. said...

I love all of these looks! I need to be more brave in my fashion choices. Since I live in Colorado (and soon to be Florida and Maryland), do you think you could share with me the place where you shop? :-) (in hopes that they would have a similar store where I live...)

Jenny said...

Love all the outfits! Especially love the houndstooth! I wish I could find me one at the Target here!

Allen and Ashlyn said...

oh fall fashion i adore you. i'm all over the cardigans, bright tights, boyfriend jacket and everything in between. its official. i'm in love.

i have been doing some thrift shopping myself. you'd be proud.

Emily said...

Yeah...you just schooled me in fashion. Don't kill me but, I'm not really into fashion that much. Most of my wardrobe is athletic shorts and t-shirts...

I already love, love, love cardigans. I love the one you're wearing. But the sad thing is, I hate tights. Like, despise them. Ever since I was little and my mom made me wear them. But I guess I will try a pair for you. I do like the brightly colored ones a lot.

That scarf, the yellow one in 3 & 4, is brilliant. I love it!

The best is that you thrift most of these clothes! That's so cool and you find the best stuff. I have a really awesome vintage/thrift store me that is just for this purpose, and I foresee myself shopping there for a new wardrobe.

You look very good in all the pics and I'd go with last outfit for the anniversary pics.

Curtis and Dani Welton said...

I love the bright tights outfit! Would look so cute for your pictures.

I REALLY need to find a great pair of boots this season. Yours look great. :)

Yvonne said...

All I can say is you must have great thrift stores. Cute, cute, cute.

Heather said...

I couldn't agree more about the good jeans. I've been thrifting rather regularly as well (looked for you at the Goodwill, btw) and been stalking my favorite consignment stores. However, I marched myself down to the Buckle and bought a new pair of Miss Me jeans with black crocheted crosses on the pockets. I. love. them. I love the detail, the fit, the feel. I think they're worth the extra money.

robynxx said...

love the outfits!

i vote boyfriend blazer with the gap tee for your anniversary pics, btw.

:)

Karen said...

I love that you're in front of the camera this time! Super cute thrift finds...I think I need to hit the thift store soon. I think your black skirt with just about anything would look great for your anniversary pics. :)

KP said...

you are so cute!
I wish i could always dress as cute as you do haha!
thanks for the advice though!
You should do more of these types of posts to help me with my fashion LOL.

I am so into bright tights right now too. I am currently wearing my mustard ones (yes, again!) and they now have 4 holes. Oh well!

Wear something with the boyfriend jacket for your anniversary!

Emily said...

I have tried thrifting. But I have never been able to find anything. Maybe I need to look better. I like the 1st outfit for your anniversary pis.

Crystal said...

I LOVE your style! It's amazing that you can find all that at thrift stores. I've tried finding some clothes at thrift stores but unfortunately there isn't a lot of cute stuff for bigger girls. haha.

I love the white blouse, black skirt, scarf, and tights for the anniversary pictures. :)

Nikki & Raf said...

I am IN LOVE with your houndstooth cardigan!

I think my favorite is the cardigan! Cute outfits!

Stu and Angie Milne said...

sexaaay lady! k seriously you look so CLASSY. my faves are the houndstoth cardi or the yellow scarf action, too cute for words. but i guess whatever coordinates best with ted. i just got some boots thrifting too! they were brand new (well until i took them all around ny with me, now they're a little trashed) good luck choosing! i think they're all winners

Cajsa said...

You look AMAZING! I love the outfit with the yellow scarf, white shirt, black skirt and yellow leggings! You should wear that for the pics!

Bethany said...

I like the yellow tights outfit, wear that one. I can't shop at thrift stores, I am a big girl and so I have to have the exact size and nothing at a thrift store ever fits me, so I have to buy expensive clothes at Macy's so it fits.

Alisa said...

the houndstooth sweater outfit. i love that sweater! houndstooth is one of my favorite patterns in the world and you look fabulous in it!

whitney said...

Is that a houndstooth cardigan?! Aww I think I'm in love. Cardigans are the best. And so is houndstooth. It gets my vote.

You are too cute.

This is now my go-to post for fall fashion. As much as I hate fall and winter, I love fall fashion. You are so beautiful, Lauren!

Ashley said...

My favorite outfit has to be the boyfriend blazer casualized with the striped tee and jeans, SO understated and sophisticated. That jacket looks like it was made for your frame- perfecto! Also cartigans are my FAAAAV, I like them in bold patterns, I <3 the juxtoposition of something that used to be considered "granny" with a bold modern pattern.

Your jeans are not tight! I think you look great! That person is just jealous! =)

Anonymous, if you are going to be mean to our Lauren, at least have the decency to use proper grammar.

You're = your, in YOUR first sentence, since you are referring to an item that belongs to Lauren, not saying that she is in fact, tight jeans. You learn this in second grade.

And for the record Lauren, your grammatically challenged commenter is WRONG about the jeans! They were totally checking out your booty... perhaps they were staring too hard.

Bekah said...

Anonymous- come on over to my blog and criticize me. I double dog dare you.

Busy Bee Lauren said...

Yes, my jeans are tight. That's the only way The Tedward likes them. You know...he likes my butt. Good times!

Thanks for noticing! xo :)

Ashton Dene' said...

Umm, I can't see the pictures (they are blocked at work, lamespice) but I've seen enough pictures of Lauren to know she is not fat or a wearer of tight jeans...so hateful!

Miss_Pippa said...

Dearest Anonymous.

I know that it must be hard for you to see Lauren rocking a pair of sexy tight jeans...ya know, on account of you either being all 'big-boned' or anorexic skinny. I understand, I really do.

I know you must feel the urge to nastily comment to break the sad monotony of your life, when you see someone like Lauren, who has an amazing family, amazing clothes, an amazing husband and a huge talent when all you have are your 18 cats.

Please. You have my sympathy.

Now go away. Your cats need feeding.

Fur realz.

That is all.

I feel so lamespice for copying but I totally bought that houndstooth cardi at target on clearance aswell.. i absolutely love it. The only thing more lamespice than that is Fairfield has like pretty much one thrift store which is the one Goodwill and the Marin Headlands, my other home is a national park and therefore has no thrift store.. let alone any store/restaurant/anything! Well.. except the visitor center.. but whatever.. I did find some awesome black leather boots at Goodwill, some beautiful vintage mirror which I might steal your paint idea from.. and a few dresses which i love and totally cant wait to wear.. so yeah. happy shopping! <3
