arizona rain.

there is a distinct smell when it is going to rain in the arizona desert.
it is one of my favorite scents in this world.
it is earthy. it is fresh. it is delicious.
the scent comes from a native plant that gives off a potent smell when moisture is in the air.
if i ever moved from arizona, i would ache for the scent of arizona rain.

on saturday it rained.
and as i waited for my photo-clients to arrive,
i reveled in the glorious smell of rain.

and i marveled at the beauty of the storm clouds up ahead.
there is something magical about rain storms in arizona.
i love my home state.
i love the rich blessings that the Lord has given me.
and that includes...the smell of arizona rain.

Beautiful post (as usual)! I too love the scent of rain. My favorite is rain on cement or chapparel bushes. Reminds me of when I was little every time. :)

I love the smell of summer rain in Iowa. Especially when it is really hot and it just starts to downpour. Then it is perfect weather for dancing in rain and pretending I'm in Pride and Prejudice ;)

I love it. It's almost like a poem, so reverent... beautiful... wow, the lit nerd inside of me is going crazy! :D HAha- I know what you mean, I love the smell of rain, and it's freshness, and all that it promises.

I am a big fan of rain (except for when it's REALLY cold and raining...that's just a bummer) and I hope someday I can smell Arizona rain. I love the smell of rain in general, but I'm intrigued by your description.

I love the smell too. I always took it for granted, but then when we moved to Utah I realized that rain smell here is SO NOT THE SAME! I always hope when we go to visit that we get a rain storm. Never happens. Anyhow, LOVE the pictures and seriously, you are so pretty, girl!

SO I have to say, like Connie, I have a hard time loving the valley.I actually feel that if there were not such wonderful people surrounding me, I would never leave my home.
I love me some Arizona MOuntains and that is the rain I got to smell this weekend. It was heaven. When it rains in the valley I actually don't mind living here. It was my favorite part of living at ASU because the street in front of our dorm would flood and Sorority girls just don't know how to handle that.

We visited New Mexico recently and we talked about how different rain smells there. I like it.

And we have the same camera.

That's so amazing. We don't really get anything special when it rains in Texas, or maybe I'm just missing it...I'll pay more attention. It's supposed to rain later today. :)

I <3 Rain.

I loved the pictures in this post, but I especially loved your writing. You should submit this to National Geographic.

In Miami, Florida, the rain has a very pungent, wet-dog smell. It's not pleasant! It's because of all the humidity. But you know something? I think I would miss it if ever I moved away from home. It's like a thread in the fabric of my life living in Miami. I would miss its color if it were taken away.

I know not of this smell that you speak of...
I love this post none the less. It made me think of that primary song. Whenever, I hear the song of a bird...you know.
These pictures are beautiful as were the words that you wrote.

I am from Washington, so it rains a lot, BUT i love the rain none the less. God is SO good. His majesty is so evident. It is beautiful to see God dust the earth with a few rain drops, or a storm.

Fantastic photos!

You'd have loved Pennington Gap this past summer...I renamed this place "Forks." Because all it did was rain...and my flowers/veggies were GLORIOUS because of it.

You are the most amusing and delightful girl. Your photos are clever and loving through and through - I so enjoy the happy pie-makers. And now you write the arizona rain poem, so I must adopt you as my daughter (or, even better, my daughter-in-law. sorry, Meg). I adopt the idea of bb lauren, and I will carry you in my prayers. P.S. I am not a stalker. I do appreciate poetry and visual image poems. :D

I just read "A Description of a City Shower" by Jonathan Swift. Its a short poem about the wretchedness of a London rainstorm. That is just never the case in Arizona! I am ubsessed with Arizona rainstorms, we are definately the lucky ones.

oooh! I'm loving the photos. I seriously LOVE the smell of rain. And after it rains. Wet pavement and grass. Arizona winters are the best!

I'm just starting to appreciate the smell of Arizona rain ... I'd only heard about it in The Host. ;o)

But for the record, it's way better than any words can describe.

You made me cry!! I am sick in bed and just read the blog of a friend who thinks the AZ temple is ugly. She called it "the box". I will grant her the right to her own opinion but that place is so dear to me!

I have lived most of my adult life outside of my home state of Arizona. Some days I just yearn to go back. You stirred up memories! That scent is so fresh in my head right now. I grew up out on the desert on a dairy on North Recker Road and McKellips. It was all dairy and citrus then anyway! Oh the smells in my memory! Thank you for stirring my heart this afternoon as I lay here wishing I could be putting up a Christmas tree!

I always thought it was the smell of wet concrete-but maybe I don't have any creosote bushes by my house. I do love even the smell of wet concrete, though, and I love any kind of weather other than sunny and hot. Storms are the bomb!

ditto, that is one of my most favorite things about Arizona. I will never move!

I have learned to appreciate the rain since I've moved out west and it rarely, if ever, rains here. I grew up in Florida where it practically rains every day (and its not nice, gentle rain, it's like horrible bucketfuls of rain that come out of nowhere), so I never appreciated the rain until now. But I have always loved the smell of rain (that happens before it starts). And your pictures are amazing!!

Emma said...

Oh I miss that. One more reason to hate Utah. We only get snow. :P I sure do love Arizona rain...its better than any other rain smell on earth!

Just to hear you talk about it is almost painful. That smell is one of my most treasured memories of going to Grandma's house. I have only found one other place that smelled like it, the laundry mat in Hawaii. Weird right.
