cameras

One of the most common questions I had on my "ask me anything" post, was what camera I used. I actually use more than one camera. I decided a list was in order...
for every day photos and what you see mostly on this blog:
the canon powershot elph, 7.1 megapixels
my powershot is a glorious camera, and in in my opinion it pwns all other "point and shoots". My brother ty first introduced me to it's awesomeness, and then my parents. We are all believers in it's beauty and wonder. The camera was about 300 dollars when we bought it, but I hear they have gone down a bit in price. in any event...i highly recommend it.
for all of my photoshoots:
Canon EOS Rebel s500
My very generous grandpa lent me his Rebel, indefinitely. How awesome is that? Anyway, I am still getting the hang of it, but so far I have really liked it. I have yet to try out the telephoto lens, but once I do I will let you know what I think of it. Overall, great camera. Only complaint is that it was made in 2000, and for some reason the software isn't compatible with my windows vista and won't allow me to connect it to my computer. If anyone wants to help me remedy this, that would be greatly appreciated.
our polaroid cameras that ted found at a thrift store for under 10 dollars each:
both polaroid 600 automatics
My main request for Christmas was for Ted to buy me a polaroid camera. Well, with much research online we found the cameras to be way too overpriced. He thought it smarter to hit up the thrift stores. He found me two cameras for so cheap! I am really excited to unwrap these bad boys on Christmas. The biggest complaint is that they no longer make film, so the film that is available online is VERY expensive. We are talking 70 dollars for a pack of 30.
and my baby that i am receiving for christmas, that will be our only "film" camera:
the diana dreamer lomography camera
In an effort to nurture my talent, instead of worrying about my photo business, Ted bought me this camera that I have been lusting over for the past few months. I am very excited to think up creative shots and see them developed on 120mm film! The main goal with this camera is to produce awesome shots for our art wall. Digital cameras are overrated.
What camera do you use, and do you recommend it to others?

I'm trying to talk my mom into giving me her old polaroid camera. To bad my sisters are trying to do the same thing.

I need a new digital camera, mine is a little on the lame side.

Lauren - get the powershot! I can't say enough good things about it. Love love love.

I've been looking for a poloroid online for months, and they're all way too expensive. I never thought to look at a thrift store, but I will definitely do that now! I have a Nikon point and shoot which I'm not so fond of, because without flash it blurs the pictures badly. Even in broad daylight.
And for Christmas... I know I'm getting a more.. 'professional' camera. Which I'm super excited about, and want to know which one it is RIGHT now!

I have a little Kodak 10MP digital one. It's pretty good but it's a bit chunky, I want one that's a bit more slimline.
I actually looked at some Canon ones the other day because they're quite cheap and have high MPs. Plus you can get them in pretty colours!

The good thing about being married is that I see everything purchased when I look on our online account. Awesome.

Does Ted at least try to keep things a secret? My boyfriend told me what he got me. He told me the same day he got it, actually.

Busy Bee Lauren said...

Oh yes. Actually, he used to get quite frustrated with me. But now he knows I would rather know exactly what he gets me. Sometimes I buy the gift and have him wrap it.

I have a little point-and-shoot very similar to yours (I think it is the model just before yours) that I use mainly for quick video of my boys. Love it! I used it up until I got my new camera, the Nikon D90. I love this one because it takes such crisp, clear shots, and I have several lenses that I can swap out for the different kinds of photos I like to take. It has a video function, but it doesn't auto-focus, so that's the only downside I've found to it. Other than that, I love it!

My main camera is a Nikon D40 SLR. I love it. It's a great thing to have with a little one running around. I still like film better, though. I do black and white photography of events for people and I use a Canon 35mm EOS rebel and I use, yes, real black and white 35 mm film. It just looks better than a digital photo that's shopped to look black and white. For quick pics we have a little digital Panasonic Lumix that fits in my purse.

My Power Shot died on me. Complete with rigor mortise because it froze upon opening. But it treated me very well for the year up to its demise!

LOVE the Polaroids!

I hear Nikons are awe.some.

I am a cannon believer as well! I just got a sleek new red one and I love her! Go get yourselves a cannon people!! I dream about getting a rebel...someday!

I have the same Canon Powershot as you! It is AMAZING! I love it! I bought it last spring, and I have never had any problems with it. Every canon I have owned has been a Canon, and I have never been disappointed!

A hint with Poloriod film: Maybe look at smaller obscure stores?? The Pharmacy I work at still has some in stock because it never sold, and the price is still the same.

Your timing is perfect! I am hoping Santa will bring me a new camera, I currently use a Nikon cool pix, but I would like a Nikon SLR so I can get better shots inside during the winter months, I love my Polaroid camera but have no idea where to get film for it. Have a sweet day!

I have the same Canon Rebel as you, and LOVE it, except it's rather bulky and gets in the way sometimes so I bought my daughter a point and shoot for Christmas that I plan to borrow a whole lot. ;)

I know it was a canon point and shoot, but now I'm curious if it's the same... gonna check.

i purchased a polaroid camera in 9th grade. i still have it and its in perfect condition. if you are lucky, some stores like walgreens and cvs have the film and its like 30 for a pack of 15 or 60 for a pack of 30. theyre fun and i dont use it very much so my film lasts a while. :)

Digital cameras *are* overrated. I took a photography class this semester where we just used 35mm black and white film. I love it. Something about being in the dark room and being able to make your own prints is really relaxing and fun for me. I borrowed my camera for the class (which is a Canon. woot!) from a guy my momma works with. He said if I liked using it, he would let me have it/buy it from him. Which is sweet.

My "point and shoot" camera is a Kodak. And I love it. I couldn't tell you the exact type right now. The bf got it for me for Christmas last year.

Staci said...

I really wanted a Canon for Christmas; rebel EOS but he said for now till we get our taxes I have to settle for Nikon L100. I ELLE-OH-VEE-EE it! I got to open it early, because my little Kodak died and you need pictures all during Dec., so I am still trying to figure things out on it. I would deff. recommend it.

I have a Nikon Coolpix for my digital to-go camera and a Nikon for a more "proffesional" camera. i love it, but i need to get better lens!

I have a power shot and LOVE it!! That last camera looks awesome. I've been on a mission to find an instant polaroid for like a year now, but no such luck, and I'm a little nervous to buy one off the internet.

Dear Lauren,
I've stumbled upon your blog from MBP and I'd just like you to know, I want to be like you when I grow up! Now that that's out of the way, I use a Nikon CoolPix for everyday stuffs, I have permanently borrowed my stepdad's Nikon D70 which I would DEFINITELY recommend if you have a spare arm and a leg, and I'm currently coveting the Canon Rebel T1i. That diana dreamer is a beauty! I am just green with jealous rage right now!
Love your blog girlie!

I have your exact same powershot and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! they have definitely come out with better AND cheaper models since I got it too. Someday I hope to get a Canon Rebel and get into digital photography more! Your photos are BEAUTIFUL and inspiring Lauren :)

Thanks for sharing! I have a horrible cheap piece of crap camera, and have been looking around for a better one.

Just have to jump in here and agree on the awesomeness that is the Canon powershot. Big, big fan here.

We have the Cannon Powershoot Elph 7.1 megapixels and actually, I get red eye in almost all my shots. Also, even on the kid & pet setting, we still get a lot of blurry.

Maybe I just need lessons on how to work it better...

Devin & Ruthann said...

Though, it does have awesome color quality.

I have the exact same Canon powershot and it's perfect to carry out and going out :)

And I recently got a Nikon D5000 as a graduation gift and so far I love it. As much as I would prefer the D700, it's ridiculously expensive. Now I'm saving up for macro lenses and a speedlight <3 I usually posts pictures on my blog (when I do actually blog) that I've taken with the Nikon

Hi! For your software problem, I would try getting a card reader! You just stick your memory card into what looks kind of like a flash drive, and then put it into a USB port into your computer! :) Idk where to find one because mine was a gift but look around! Hope that helps!

I have always been a camera junkie. hehe. I use a Nikon Coolpix S210 for my point and shoot. That camera never leaves me purse. I have a Minolta 7D SLR that I bought years ago and it still works like a charm. For film, I have a Ricoh SLR (my very first camera, completely manual) and a Minolta SLR. They are all my babies.

Thanks for sharing!

Are you sure on the model # of your Grandpa's camera? Maybe it is because it is old, but on Canon's site, the s500 is a Powershot, not a EOS Rebel. Not sure if they renumbered or what. But they have all the drivers and everything needed to hook up with Vista there on Canon's site for download: Canon

Although, I would agree with whoever suggested just getting a card reader. Simple, efficient, and solves the problem at hand without too much hassle. Then you can Photoshop or whatever your heart out. Something like this (cheaper ones are out there dedicated to whatever media card type your camera has - this one goes with the shotgun approach and gets 19 types): B&H

But what would I know, I'm a Nikon user (D60)... ;-)

My husband REALLY wants to buy a DSLR (??) something-or-other by, I think, Cannon? I dunno - all I looked at was the price and nearly fell over! It's got some humungo-ginormous lens and a pretty good video capability, apparently. We have baby #1 on the way, so we def. want a new camera, but I also suggested to him something small and easy to tote around that I can throw in my purse and not worry about busting the mucho-expensive lens. Maybe the PowerShot will end up under my Christmas tree! ;)

kate lines said...

yes, a card reader will fix your problem, my dear.

Connie said...

I'm a canon girl all the way- last year they fixed my powershot free of charge- when I did something dumb to it.
You'll have to tell us what you think about the film once you get it. I don't ever want to have to develop film- it's so nice just to edit it right on your comp. If I remember right, you can do some editing in a dark room but otherwise you have to scan it to make drastic changes? I don't know- I didn't take that class. I wish the class I took taught me more than basic features of a camera and more about photoshop. Everything I know about photoshop I taught myself from google searches.

K this is getting long- you just picked a topic I'm really into :p Cute mint green color on the film camera- it's absolutely darling! Merry Christmas to you!

Azul said...

I love my Elph! I bought a DSLR (the Canon Rebel 12 xti) a few months ago and was shocked to find that I actually liked my teeny little Elph better in most cases. I'm sure it's just a matter of teaching myself to use the Rebel properly, but ouch... $800 lesson learned there.

I agree with Connie... I'm a Canon girl through and through.

Oh! I would love a lomo camera!! I love the look of lomography. I found a tutorial on how to replicate the look.. but you don't need it now!

We have a Nikon D40.. we love it! Totally would recommend it.

Let me know when you post about DB, so I can post about your post :P

Love love love Canon! Just traded in a Nikon with 10 pixels for a Canon again with 6 pixels because I did not know what I had til it was gone!

I just wanted to say you should start playing with your telephoto lens. I got one a few years ago and hated it the first couple of times I used it. My pictures looked like and ignorant monkey took them. I put it up and didn't mess with it for a loooong time. I finally got it back out last year, read the manual (Hubs was so proud), and started using it again and I love it!
