weekend food.

the people of mesa are weird.
they all seem to decide that a certain restaurant is good, so then it becomes popular to eat there.
some eat there because they actually love it; some just because it is popular.

ted and i have heard many-a-whisperings about "gecko grill".
i once saw it when i was next door to it eating Dippin' Dots, and I clearly remember thinking the title "Gecko Grill" didn't sound very appetizing. I then was grateful for the small bowl of delicious ice cream in my hands.

friday ted and i decided to try out this "gecko grill".
one, because people go crazy nutzo for it.
two, because people said we weren't true "mesans" until we ate there.
for shame!

when we arrived, probably 75% of the people there were people I have ran into at least twice in my life. the other 25% were close enough to us to give us a hug without feeling like they overstepped their boundaries. like i said, mesa people "flock" to places.

we were very impressed with the chips, salsa and bean dip.
however, the bean dip didn't meet the awesomeness that is the serrano's bean dip.

our friend, Bill Wahl was there (of course he was) and he told us to order the mango shrimp quesadilla. we trust Bill with his infinite knowledge, so we ordered it. at first bite I was in love. I wanted to leave ted for the delicious quesadilla. but then after the second bite, I decided it was too rich. holy moly freakinspice. sooooooo rich! i had to take a breather.

i ordered the shrimp and crab burrito. i thought the quesadilla was rich.
um. no. i took one bite of the burrito and called it a night.
so, after a handful of chips, two bites of quesadilla, one bite of burrito and 30 dollars later, i went home with a tummy ache and disappointment.
should.have.went.to.costa.vida.

--------------------------------------------

tonight i was feeling like something warm and hearty so i decided to make soup.
one of my favorite ways to make soup is with the organic ready-made-soups from Sprout's.

I chopped up one shallot, 5 cloves of garlic, 2 carrots, 1 bell pepper and the juice of one lemon.
while i sauteed the veggies in a pan with a tsp of olive oil, i cooked some wild rice.
once the veggies were tender I added in the ready made "fire roasted tomato" soup and let it simmer for a while.
when the rice was done i added it in, along with half a can of black beans.
right before serving i added a handful of sundried tomatoes.

i quickly toasted up some homemade croutons by cubing two slices of whole wheat sourdough, tossing with a little olive oil, sprinkling with garlic salt and fresh ground pepper, then throwing in the oven for about 10 minutes on 350.

top the soup with the croutons and fresh mozzarella, and voila!
this dinner made for a very happy tedward.

Cafe Rio's pork is better than Costa Vida's pork. That is a fact.
I used to hate Cafe Rio until I met the pork. I haven't been to Costa Vida in a long time.
But maybe you don't eat the pork. I like the chicken better at Costa Vida.

i'm sorry you didn't like Gecko Grill although I don't really feel like you are a true mesa resident until you've eaten at El Charro...now that is the bomb dot com!

Oh my delicious! Lauren, than looks decedant. I have to agree with you, though. Serrano's bean dip is heavenly, along with it's Spanish rice. I've NEVER found a mexican restaraunt that makes it as good as they do...period. :)

Elysie Piecie said...

Can't wait to try out the recipe. I still make your enchiladas that you put up on Lauren's Bite all the time. So yummy.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person in Mesa who was less than impressed with Gecko Grill. I was way more impressed with the Dippin Dots next door ;) Costa Vida is so much better. :) I'm so excited for pictures on Friday!! :D the forecase is for rain, but I have an umbrella I can bring. It could make for some cute pics :)

I just have to say that you are just too cute! I stumbled on to your blog a couple days ago, and I think that you are breath of fresh air. Keep on being you, because you are fantastic.

P.S. That soup looks absolutely mouthwatering.

I am so sad that you didn't like Geko Grill! that is totally my favorite place! not because it's popular but because it's YUMMY! it's funny because I used to LOVE Serrano's bean dip. I thought, hands down best bean dip ever. Then I tried Geko, at first I didn't like it, I though Serrano's was still way better, then eating it a few more times, I was obsessed with Geko's bean dip! I would crave it at odd times of the day. Brint LOVES the shrimp Mango quesadilla, my favorite dish is the Special Chimichanga. it's really rich though, so if you don't like rich food then you might not like it. But there bean and cheese burrito enchilada style with green sauce it delish! :)

That soup looks delicious!

I hate it when foods are so yummy at first but then you realize it's MUCH too rich. It makes me sad.

Britney Jean said...

i've never eaten at gecko grill either. at least that i remember. but i know what you mean about being told you aren't a true mesan if you don't. but i don't care. it doesn't sound appetizing. i'll stick to rosas and serranos thank you very much.

and that soup looks amazing. i want to try it out.

I am still a cafe Rio girl...I think it is just all what we are used to and comfy with.I think Costa Vida's salads are too sweet.

Back in "the day" when Westwood class of '75 ruled the town we didn't have many choices. Of course everyone ate at Mattas' because, well, every one ate there! My first date was there! There was also El Charo and Rosita's in Tempe. Other than that we had Pizza Hut...whoopee.

I do find myself yearning for a Matta's sopapilla every now and then. Nobody in Utah seems to know what they are!

I love your soup and I think I will give it a try!

Cajsa said...

Serranos bean dip is the best! Soooo with you there!!! I don't like bean dip much but I will eat theirs up!! Your soup looks delish! I wish I had creative cooking skills!

Gecko Grill is amazing. Their Shrimp quesadilla sucks. The chicken mango is about a thousand times more delicious. Mmmmn Sorry you had such an awful experience!

I have a serious confession to make. I know not of this Costa Vida you speak so highly of. It makes me sad. I will just have to trust you about its awesomeness.
