delirium book review
A few weeks ago, I received a tweet from Abbi telling me I needed to read "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver. I had a large stack of books to read at the time, but I wrote it down as one to pick up the next time I happened to be at Barnes and Noble. Flash forward to last week. Michelle tweeted that she had just been to Borders and because they were going out of business, everything was on a crazyspice sale. I don't think she said "crazyspice" but I would have probably proposed to her if she had. But that's a different story. I had a half day of work, and it was raining outside, and I couldn't think of a better way to spend my extra time to do whatever the heck I wanted, than buy books at a bookstore that was going out of business. So off I went!
I picked up "Watership Down"...because I love rabbits. I snabbed "One Day" because I remembered Kate had said it was good...and I liked the cover art. Yes, I totally judge a book by it's cover. I also picked up a couple other books that I can't remember the titles of (I am ridiculous). I headed to the cash register with my books and marveled at how pathetic the bookstore looked. They weren't just selling books for pocket change...they were selling the bookcases, the carpeting and even the light fixtures. I mean, people were on latters unscrewing lightbulbs and everything! While I have a hatred for Borders because they totally ruined my life when "Breaking Dawn" came out in 2008, I couldn't help but feel sad for them. It made me think of "You've Got Mail"...except Borders is infinitely less cool and as important as The Shop Around The Corner. But I digress...I was still fleetingly sad.
I said "fleetingly" because at the climax of my sadness, my eyes caught on something blue, and pretty. It was a book. A really pretty colored book. And since I judge a book by it's cover, I picked it up. And what did it turn out to be? "Delirium". Hundreds of tweets flashed before my eyes of book recommendations, until it landed on the one from Abbi. I remembered I was supposed to buy this book. And I remembered I had written myself a note to do so. And I remembered that I had accidentally used that note paper to wrap my used gum in...thus ending up in the trash. But something about the pretty shade of blue on the cover, recovered my memories, thus reminding me that I should buy this book. So I did.

This week I read it. And it was incredible. The book is set in a time where love isn't something desired, but feared. It isn't something that you yearn to feel one day...it's something that you yearn to cure yourself of. You see, when you turn 18, you are sent to "the labs" to have a procedure done to your brain that not only cures you from ever feeling love...it also takes other things from you. But of course, no one realizes what they are missing, because how can you miss something you never had?
The main protagonist, Lena, is approaching the age of 18, and is counting down the days until the procedure. She can't wait to be sheltered from the fear she feels. The fear of somehow contracting the symptoms to the disease, that will not only drive you to madness, but will kill you. Of course, along the way she meets a young man that will change her views on love. Maybe love isn't so bad afterall. Maybe love is the thing that helps you see clearly. The reason to get up in the morning. The one thing that will make you appreciate everything around you even more. Maybe it's worth fighting for.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was SO beautifully written, and the characters were people you actually cared about. You rooted for them. Lena and her best friend, Hana, were two female characters that didn't make you want to rip your hair out. They were characters you would want to be best friends with. And Alex...oh Alex. What a book boyfriend he is!
Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend this read. I am trying to decide if I liked "Matched" better or not...but I am thinking I liked "Delirium" more! I hope that helps put things in perspective, because you know how much Iove "Matched".
PS...a word of caution to my younger readers...there are two "F" words in it. So...don't get mad at me if you read it and I didn't warn you. The end.

i swear....
...i bet you thought by the title of this post that i was going to confess to saying a swear word.
but alas, i still have not...after all of these 23 years of my life. yes, i like to pat myself on the back.
but, i probably shouldn't, because i use slang like "pissed off"..."that sucks!" and..."that's bull shiz!" too often.
anyway...back on topic.
i was going to say "i swear the craziest things happen to me!" because they totally do. seriously.
want to hear another installment of craziness? mmmkay, i thought you would.
so, i had one of the worst days ever.
so here i am, driving home basically hating life, listening to angry girl music with the window rolled down, when it happens. i see from the car in front of me, a person flick their used cigarette butt out of their window and i watch it soar through the air in horror. i am horrified BECAUSE it soars expertly into my open window. yes. into my window. and that's not all...no. of course it isn't. the freakin' (there i go with the slang again) cigarette butt hits me right in the face. dude. how do these things happen to me?!
so here i am, totally peeved and grossed out. and IN UTTER SHOCK!
but alas...i get over it and speed up to see who the culprit was. because of course i was already profiling in my head who the offender HAD to be. and of COURSE it had to be a him. because i am evil that way. well...i was wrong. it was a little old lady who not only looked like she was 160 years old and near death. no, she was an ancient-almost-dead granny that had half her hand up her nose, digging for gold. or diamonds. or buried treasure. or...massaging her brain!
so let me break this down for you:
1. lauren had a bad day.
2. lauren gets hit in the face with a used cigarette butt.
3. said cigarette butt came from the mouth of an-almost-dead granny that also likes to massage her brain.
the end.
PS...someone please bring me chocolate.
the end end.

more hunger games chit chat.
so my bestie-pal, and hunger games partner in crime, kate, sent me this link.
do you know what this link means?! it tells us who has tested for the roles of Peeta and Gale!
kate and i had much to discuss when we read who had tested. we were a little worried with the Peeta Mellark choices, and we were horrified to find out that we basically swoon dead over all of the Gale Hawthorne choices. i mean, Drew Roy? and David Henrie? dude. so here i have compiled our thoughts on Peeta:
for the role of peeta mellark:
[pros] he is tall (6'0"), has the right build for Peeta, he is young enough to be believable as Peeta...not some 20-something pretending to be a teen (cough, cough...glee!).
[cons] his resume isn't very impressive...we need a great actor! and, after watching this youtube clip, we decided he is weird and awkward. um...no.
[pros] he is also on the taller side (5'10"), he has the "boy next door" look to him, and he seems like he could be protrayed as someone very sweet. he has a lot of credits to his name, and even though he was in the Hannah Montana Movie, he actually can act really well.
[cons] this...
hahaha! we really couldn't come up with any bad things to say. plus, after watching this clip, right after watching the one of alexander ludwig? yeah...we want to hug him. i'm pretty sure he is eating froyo. what a guy. so yeah...that wasn't a con, but yeah. :)
[pros] he LOVES the books, he is a GREAT actor, he is cute.
[cons] he is shorter (5'7") and he has the wrong coloring. we don't want there to be another brunette turned blonde mishap...ala Rosalie from Twilight! we know makeup does wonders...but still. you know what i mean? i worry about these things.
[pros] he is a top choice among hunger games fans (not ours, though) so he will be greatly supported on that front, he is a good actor, he seems like he genuinely cares about the books and fans.
[cons] he is short (5'7"), we feel like the role of Peeta would be tainted by his role in "Weeds"...we know we shouldn't feel that way...but all of the smoking of weed, and bad language and the "special hugs" with women? yeah...it ruined our pure image. also....he me reminds of him:
not saying that's a bad thing.
there are no words.
so our overall thoughts? we want Lucas Till.
it's funny because someone had suggested him to us sometime last year, and we laughed.
but we have really opened our minds, and done a lot of research, and we think he is the perfect fit.
and...we have no idea why that Evan guy is even being considered.
the end.

Domo sees the world!
do you remember my little Domo friend? he's totally handsome, huh?
anyway, this week i expressed to my therapist how much i really hate living in arizona.
i know, i know...i make it seem like it's an awesomespice place to live, and it really is...it's a great place.
it's a wonderful place to raise a family, and it has glorious weather in the winter...but i'm bored. i'm bored out of my freakin' mind.
but, i know that arizona is where we need to be, so i talked to her about how i wished i could travel more.
i love traveling. i love it more than a lot of things. i am truly happy when i am exploring a new place.
well, i have sat around this week lamenting how i am not traveling...and today it hit me.
instead of moping about it...i'm going to do something about it!
you see, my little Domo friend loves to travel too. and more than that, he LOVES to have his picture taken.
how wonderful! traveling and taking pictures are MY favorite things, too! but right now i can't travel the world with him...
so i came up with this amazing, awesomespice, stellar and totally exciting plan!
i'm sending Domo around the world with a notebook and a disposable camera!
and how am i going to do this? i am going to send him to YOU! yes, YOU!
here is the plan:
[a] my goal is for Domo to visit as many of the 50 states in the US.
[b] after he has visited the states, he is going abroad! i'd love for him to visit as many countries as possible.
[c] the photo must be of him in front of something that best represents the place he is visiting. for instance, if he is in New York, maybe have him posed in front of the Statue of Liberty. If he is in Los Angeles, maybe have him in front of the Hollywood sign. If he is Nashville, maybe have him "chowing" on some BBQ? Just some ideas!
[d] only one photo is to be taken a each stop, so make sure you get a good one!
[e] the notebook is to write a little paragraph about the place he is visiting. you will number your entry by the exposure number on the disposable camera.
[f] you will be given a name and address of the next person you are to send Domo to, and sending him promptly is encouraged!
the goal is to make a little scrapbook of all of his adventures so i can live vicariously through him :)
if you want to help me in this super fun project, please email me at busybeelaurenblog@gmail.com
on my mind: take 2
saturday i locked my keys in my car, so i had to sit at my mom's house doing nothing all day.
i decided to bust out some of her colored pencils and work on some therapy art. see the 1st one here.
on a completely unrelated note, can we PLEASE laugh at this amazing new tshirt that marissa sent me a link to? because when i opened up the link i am pretty sure my life became complete. and when i told ted that a friend sent me a link to it, he was sad because he said "i wished your friend had sent me that shirt...not just a link." HAHAHA, whaaaat?! i said, "why? so you could be Michael Scofield for halloween?" and he said, "no, so i can be Michael Scofield to work...or just in real life." amazing.
check it:
"Michael Scofield’s tattoo in Prison Break has impressed many people all around the world, and most of them dreamed to have a similar one. Maybe have known such strong needs, Century Japan recently announced that it will launch transparent tattoo t-shirt. Wow, that’s truly the most convenient way to become Michael Scofield."
wait for it...
wait...for...ittttttttt.....
BAM!
OH MY GOSH.
i can basically see all of your astonished and jealous faces gazing longingly at your computer screens right now.
i know...i know....i know.

yogurtland
okay, so i consider myself a frozen yogurt expert...but this week i realized i really am not.
i had never been to yogurtland! yes, that does remind me of this:
i don't know why the name yogurtland makes me think of rainbows, unicorns and...dandy mountain, but it totally does. haha! anyway, my friend Shannon told me i needed to go to yogurtland ASAP and to report back to her. the thing was, i thought it would be cool to join the people who participate in Lent and give up sugar. i did good until this saturday...and i caved! ha. oh well. let me just say right now that i am SO HAPPY i caved.
you guys, i don't know how to say this...but...i'm cheating on Golden Spoon.
yes, because i'm in LOVE with Yogurtland. it has now become my VERY FAVORITE froyo of all time.
those are big words coming from me.
please go and get the coconut, madagascar vanilla bean, double stuffed oreo cookie or the pistachio.
please...just go. kthanxbye.

"face family" green party
as i mentioned a few posts back, my family has an annual "green party"
no, it's not where we discuss ways to improve the environment (though, that would be hilarious)
it's what my mom calls our st. patrick's day party!
mama face likes to go all out and decks the place out.
i was about to say she "pimps it out" but i thought she would be offended.
which she probably is now that i just said that. HAHAHA!
sorry, mom.
anyway, it's a requirement to wear green.
turns out ted only has one item of green clothing, and he had forgotten it was in the washing machine.
so we were 15 minutes late because he had to put it in the dryer at 5:00...when the party started.
and i'm pretty sure the shirt was still damp when he put it on, which he only did because i was whining at him for us being late. he hates my whiny voice. i happen to like it because it gets him to get me glasses of water, and sometimes sliced apples for a snack. but that's besides the point.
mama face made us chicken quesadillas in green tortillas...which made me think of this all night:
but who WOULDN'T be reminded of that? i mean, really.
we also had mint kisses...the chocolate kind. that would be awkward if...yeah.
and of course, shamrock shaped homemade sugar cookies.
for those that have asked for the recipe, i'm sorry but it's a family secret...can't tell!
anyway, the party was very...green.
and delicious.
and very "dang quesadilla"-y.
cool.
